Long lines make me want to pull my hair out, but even worse is a long line at airport security. There are way too many things to worry about, like keeping your liquids under four ounces and emptying water bottles. Trying to get through security is a task in and of itself.
Be at ease, though. A little preparation can go a long way. One way to prepare is to make sure your outfit is perfect for the long, sometimes bumpy ride.
Kimberly Pruitt spent five years working at the Los Angeles International Airport as a security officer. Here are four things she said are the worst things you can wear to an airport.
Maxi dresses and skirts
Pruitt says, “If you are opposed to getting patted down, then wearing a maxi skirt or dress isn’t your best bet because the officer will have to check you are not hiding anything under your skirt.”
Lots of bobby pins
“Believe it or not, too many bobby pins will set off the metal detector,” says Pruitt. If you want to wear your hair with a lot of bobby pins, try doing it after you get through security. Besides, who really looks good on flights?
“Cargo pants and shorts are one of the most difficult items of clothing at the airport. All the different pockets become a major hassle because they almost always set off the alarm.” You’re almost always will have forgotten a lighter or a set of keys.
Metal bracelets and necklaces
“Large metal bracelets and necklaces will set off the metal detector,” Pruitt says. “The biggest problem item is the Cartier Love bracelet. These bracelets can only be removed with a screwdriver.”
If you’re going to wear something like that, avoid the hassle. Put it on after the screening.
